  1. Terrific photos Tim. Nothing like a good back scratching, I’m guessing that’s what’s going on. City girl question, why do all of the horses look like they have blindfolds on?

    • Hi Mia. The rolling is a combo of back scratching and a dust bath. The horse is wearing a fly mask that keeps flies out of its eyes. There are a wide range of fly mask styles some with shear netting others that look like solid fabric. Some have ear covers, as well.

      • Hi Tim, thank you for sharing that information. Of course, I remember as a child going for pony rides and the flies were all about in the poor pony’s face, even their ears looked a little nibbled on. The mask is a good thing!

      • We had horses until I was well into my teens. The flies tormented the horses all summer and I remember we were always treating their eyes for various things. Back then we didn’t have fly masks, but the feed stores sold leather fringe that connected to the harness and hung over the horse’s eyes that worked okay to help brush the flies away when the horses moved or shook their heads.
